Coonabarabran has a population of around 3,500 with major supermarkets and stores, a library, post office, NRMA office and Service NSW office. There is a hospital, pharmacies, dentists, doctors, aged care.
Coonabarabran is the closest town to the Siding Spring Observatory, which is home to the 3.9-metre Anglo-Australian Telescope, the largest optical telescope in Australia. There is little to no light pollution ideal for astronomical viewing.
The area is easily accessed from the Newell Highway which is the major road link directly between Melbourne, Victoria and Brisbane, Queensland and cuts across inland New South Wales from the north to the south.
