Wild Sanctuary: a unique 108ha ecoproperty® on Tasmania’s East Coast, 10 minutes from stunning beaches, the Douglas Apsley National Park and Bicheno
- Bicheno Tas
Enjoy 102ha of the land is under permanent Conservation Covenant protecting the natural values of the land and endangered plants and animals. Excised from this covenant is 4ha around the dwelling area; as well as 1 ha on top of the hill overlooking the ocean and 1ha by the Apsley River, offering potential areas for more eco-accommodation.
The 2br architect-designed house was built in 2017 to strict bushfire standards and is totally off-grid with a 3.5kw solar power system. It has magnificent views of the Douglas Apsley National Park and the coast. The open plan living area includes a sunny kitchen adjacent to a large pantry which connects to a cool room/wine cellar. A wood heater warms the whole house and has a large oven and steel cooktop for cooking in winter; and there is an electric Miele induction stove and oven for summertime.
Upstairs there is two bedrooms; an area between the bedrooms for an office/study and a spacious deck.
Double glazing makes for a cool house in summer and a warm house in winter.
There are two fire hoses connected to the outside of the house to Tasmanian Fire Service recommendation.
The house has 2 x 22,000L water tanks, 2 composting toilets and a grey-water sand filtration system draining into the garden.
The artist/yoga/dance studio has a large outdoor deck, wood heater and is also double glazed. This could serve as another bedroom. It is built over a spacious 2 car garage which houses the laundry, workshop, ample storage space and the solar system and batteries. With a 7,600L water tank, the laundry has a separate pump to the house.
Adjacent to the double garage is a mandatory 10,000L fire service tank plus an extra 7,000L for garden use, and a 5,000L water tank above the studio.
An approximately 600m2 organic fruit and vegetable garden produces abundant food all year round, with more to come as the garden matures, contributing to self-sufficiency and/or cottage industry.
The garden area is fully caged and protected from animals and large birds, and the trees are irrigated. There are 21 varieties of fruit trees, berries, herbs, flowers and hazelnuts as well as 5 wicking beds for growing vegetables using minimal water, and wire cages for growing potatoes.
Next to the garden is a large boat shed (9x8m2) with a 14,000L water tank for the garden.
There are 3 Mongolian yurts for extra accommodation; 2 are 5m diameter and have a solar panel for lighting and one set of traditional yurt furniture (2 single beds, table, 4 stools, 2 cabinets and altar table), plus some extra beds. The third yurt is 6.3m diameter.
A fully equipped camp kitchen has solar power for lighting and a fridge, a gas cooker, open fire, 1,100L water tank and sink and benches. Nearby is a composting toilet with 3000L water tank and a gas shower.
Soak beneath the sky in the luxurious outdoor fire bath!
The total amount of water tank capacity for this habitation zone is approximately 91,000L.
There are several walking tracks on the property. One takes you to the top of the Diamond Ridge overlooking the ocean and joins with a fire trail that leads into Bicheno (about an hour’s walk), another track goes to the Apsley River where there is a small campsite with fireplace and access to large private swimming pools surrounded by virgin bush. A third track traverses the ridge through bushland of grasstrees (Xanthhorea Australia) and endangered Eucalyptus barberi.
Satellite NBN ensures that you can work from home and the thriving seaside township of Bicheno is only 10 minutes away. Bicheno is a very popular destination for holiday makers and boasts some of the best underwater diving in Tasmania as well as surf beaches, safe swimming beaches, and a boat ramp. Whales are often seen off the coast as they migrate and penguins inhabit the shores around town. This part of the coast has mild winters and warm summers, and enjoys the state’s highest number of days of sunshine. Bicheno has a Primary School, with secondary school 40 minutes away in St Mary’s; golf course: Health Centre; supermarket, several cafes and restaurants. Freycinet National Park is 30 minutes away. The East Coast is known for its many vineyards, stunning beaches and fresh seafood. Bicheno is 2 hours from Launceston and 2.5 hours from Hobart.
If you dream to be immersed in nature; grow your own food; live in a self-sufficient way with clean air; swim in a pristine ocean; operate a small accommodation/retreat business then Wild Sanctuary is made for you!
